After 16 months of renovations (we broke ground late July 2018), we were still trying to figure out how to finish our floors. Luckily, a neighbor happened to mention that our neighborhood's builder used Tung Oil pretty much exclusively on all wood and stone. Andrew did some digging and managed to not only confirm the Tung Oil hypothesis, but he actually found the company and specific brand that had been used on our home close to 40 years ago when it was originally built! Tung Oil is an amazing product... non toxic, natural, and it can not only seal unfinished stone... but can patch and refinish sealed floors as well (without any sanding or stripping needed)!! The only issue is that it takes many coats to soak into the stone and create the right finish. So we knew the process would take time and that we'd have to do 3 or 4 coats on the new floors followed by patching our old floors where the finish had chipped. Then we'd have to do one final coat on top of the entire downstairs... and all of this adds up to many days without access to the kitchen, moving furniture, and a even couple days pretty much stuck upstairs (losing access to the downstairs bathroom and bedroom)! But it was the very last push to finish the whole project... and we since we had all the information we needed, we decided to do it ourselves. This saved us money and gave us total control over the schedule/timing of each coat (like working over Thanksgiving break and using Sunday nights for painting time so floors could be dry the next day by dinner time). It was a simple product to use (fool proof really) and we are thrilled with the result (and just to be finished finished finshed at long last)! Here is the process...
